Foreign players registered with Maltese clubs now have the opportunity to learn English by enrolling in one of the basic English courses offered by the Malta Football Players Association (MFPA). Gzira United trio Maxuell Maia Samurai, Yuri Messias and Cali Correa, Mosta duo Rafael Morisco and Luis Carlos Riascos, and Sta Lucia’s Patrick Silva Mota recently completed the first 40-hour course with the sessions held at the MFPA offices in Gudja over a five-week period.
This course is part of the MFPA’s overarching educational programme which is intended to provide active football players with more learning opportunities as acquiring new skills in parallel with a football career is essential for their long-term financial stability.
Carlo Mamo, the MFPA General Secretary, said: “The first edition of the basic English course follows discussions with a number of coaches and players. We felt the need to assist players who may have difficulties to communicate during training and to follow the coaches’ instructions as well as to help them in their daily routines since they are living in Malta.
“The number of foreign players in Maltese football is increasing constantly and this is another reason why we have launched this course which has been very well received.”
The response for the basic English course, which is offered free of charge, has been very encouraging, prompting other foreign players to express their interest in participating in the second edition commencing in January.
“We have started with the first group, in January we will have the second intake and we have already received other requests from foreign players at other clubs,” Mamo said. “The feedback from the participants has been very positive. They have 40 hours of tuition and those attending all the sessions receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.
“Furthermore, the idea is that players who complete the course may be interested in obtaining another form of qualification which may help them not only on the football pitch but also to plan for life after their playing careers or to attend college or university.”
