The recent events which transpired this past Sunday and the alleged verbal racial slurs levied at Sliema's Salomon Wisdom, shed light on a long standing problem in local football. A problem which has in fact, been a priority on MFPA's agenda since the Association's very inception. For years MFPA has been actively working to educate and advocate against any kind of racism, via its campaign Show Racism the Red Card.
MFPA, is deeply empathetic with Mr Wisdom and any other players who might have been victims of cowardly acts of racism during their career. It promises to continue working harder in order to replace the barriers caused by racism and bigotry, with bridges of mutual respect. It also calls on its members and all football players to rise above the antagonism and not fall prey of the need for retaliation, since this will only serve to break down any bridges built and reverse any progress made.
The beautiful game will only remain beautiful, if it continues to transcend gender and race as a tool for unification not for division. To do this, we must all pull the same rope.
