The Malta Football Players Association (MFPA) is compelled to report another case of unacceptable treatment of football players by a local football club that has failed to pay its players for over three months. The situation is both appalling and concerning.

The team in question includes five foreign players who earn close to or the equivalent of the national minimum wage. To make an already difficult situation worse, it has also come to light that a portion of the players’ salaries in the initial months of the season was deducted to cover accommodation costs.

The on-going implementation of the MFPA strategy for the period 2023-2026, updates on a number of pending claims lodged by the MFPA on behalf of member players and regulatory matters were on the agenda of the latest meeting of the Association’s Executive Meeting.

A review of the fourth MFPA Strategy Paper showed that nearly 70 per cent of the strategic actions and initiatives have been delivered within the first two years of the stipulated four-year cycle.

The Malta Football Players Association (MFPA) welcomes the amendment to the Malta Football Association regulations, which now stipulate that players aged 14 and older can only sign the 4-year term registration (ages 15-19) AFTER the end of the season (June 8th) in which they are eligible to play in the Under-15 Competition. Previously, players could sign before the season ended, effectively committing to a term of more than 4 years.

Regrettably, this close season has once again been tarnished by numerous cases of players who have had to seek redress over unpaid wages from previous seasons.

In the last few weeks alone, the MFA Complaints Board has upheld claims over outstanding wages submitted by over 12 players who were registered with Gudja United FC, who played in the Premier League last season. Due to this, the said club has been handed a transfer ban and is not able to register any new players until all outstanding salaries claimed have been duly paid.
